Mickey borrows Mario's trademark 'bum bounce' move as well as having the ability to lob apples at his enemies, who all had a cute, cartoony feel. The game sees Mickey Mouse trying to rescue Minnie Mouse from the clutches of an evil queen with gameplay typical of the side-scrolling platformer. Whether a Mickey fan or not, this game has something to offer gamers.Īn early game to demonstrate the graphical prowess of the Genesis (Mega Drive in the UK) - the levels which saw Mickey leap from leaf to leaf in front of gorgeous multi-parallax scrolling backgrounds were a joy to behold. This is definitely a recommended title for those who enjoy Disney games, and just a well-rounded Sega platformer in general. The light and water effects found in this game were generally unheard of at this time, and even by today's standards, it's still a fun game to play and an appealing title to look at. Simply put, it's a beautiful game, and shows off the graphic capabilities of the Genesis. This is also a fairly simple game, so it will be possible to complete this in one sitting. While there is challenge and things to do, Mickey seems to be taking his time throughout the levels, even though he's trying to save Minnie from a Witch.
The challenges throughout the game are interesting, and the control handles well, with no pause or delay in gameplay. The music is catchy and appropriate for each level with plenty of the standard platform sound effects. The graphics are incredibly well detailed, with fluid animation, unique special effects, and diverse backgrounds. It was one of the first games to show off the advanced hardware of the Sega Genesis and remains one of the best video games starring Mickey Mouse.

Heck, even the act of jumping on enemies, a clear homage to Super Mario Brothers, is wonderfully animated. Each level, their enemies and bosses, could easily have been taken out of a Disney cartoon and icons in each level help out with points, extra lives, energy refill and various projectiles to throw. The game features incredible animation, graphics, music and sound effects. Castle of Illusion is one of the most harmless games I have played in a long time, and for a change that works in its favor.Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse is a wonderful single player, platformer game. A must-have for fans of the original, for fans of platforming games, and for parents who need a safe game for kids with no violence or sexuality. The game is very short, so I feel that future DLC would be a great idea. The atmosphere and cheer generated by Castle of Illusion make it the perfect Xmas game, I think Sega could have made it a bigger hit releasing it closer to December, or at least offering an Xmas-themed DLC.

Grant Kirkhope's fairy tale score is full of cheerful melodies and compliments the visuals perfectly. The level of detail in the levels is astounding, though, strangely, it feels more like a remake of World of Illusion (which I prefer) in many parts. The levels are 2.5D recreations of the Mega Drive counterparts all with a warm narration which makes it feel like a bedtime storybook as well as a cartoon. Mickey follows Mizrabel into the Castle of Illusion where he must work his way through the many floors collecting diamonds to create a rainbow bridge to Minnie's prison cell. Mickey and Minnie are enjoying a picnic when evil witch Mizrabel kidnaps Minnie and plans to use her to regenerate her youth. The magical world created for this remake is so magical and enchanting it feels like a Disney cartoon that you control. Castle of Illusion is one of the classics from the Mega Drive era and was ripe for re-imagining in high definition.
